The Wellness Issue
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR:
The Road to Wellville
Like John Harvey Kellogg in T. Coraghessan Boyle's novel The Road to Wellville, many of us have sought out ways (some extreme and quirky) to stay well during this past year, emotionally and physically.
We’ve cooked more. We’ve connected to our farmers. We’ve shopped the farmers markets. We’ve taken long walks in the woods. We’ve bought bikes. And many of us reconnected with dormant desires like writing, painting, or baking bread, gaining new skills along the way.
This issue celebrates what we’ve gained from COVID individually and collectively. The creative, beautiful, and robust food from The Heimerdinger Foundation that nourishes cancer patients, and now readers of this magazine. A new local sparkling water that helped save one soul and is quenching the thirst of others. Fantastic food that celebrates the old ways while keeping chefs dreaming and working and a new appreciation for local milk. We have thoughts on getting through the pandemic from a farmer and a chef. And a round-up of new products and local markets where we love to shop.
We know that what’s ahead is better than what’s behind us. Opening may be slow, gathering may be small steps, feeling optimistic may be hard, but we’ll get there. Enjoy this issue during the dark days of winter and get ready for 2021. Chances are, it’s going to be one helluva year!
Stay well. Eat well. Cook well.
