After 19 years in the corporate world, Mini Panyavong decided to launch her own sauce company that reflected her Asian heritage as well as her busy schedule as a mom of a toddler. We’re not usually big on bottled sauces, but we tossed in some leftover tofu we had in the fridge to try it out and well, we’re in love. The whole line of Mini Fusion sauces hit all the right notes of tangy, sweet, salty, and (of course) umami. They’re super versatile and are as good on Korean stir fried noodles as they are on grilled steak.

Julio Hernandez grew up in Tlaxcala, Mexico and knows the taste of heirloom non-GMO corn well. As a chef working in restaurants, he realized there was a need for better masa products. So, once the pandemic set in, he set out to make them. Julio stone grinds masa from Mexico, using a process called Nixtamal, a pre-historic tradition that supports small farmers and produces a non-GMO, gluten free masa rich in Vitamin C. The resulting tortillas are thicker than store bought and super flavorful. You can buy Julio’s tortillas and delicious dishes using them from their food truck at The Richland Park Farmers’ Market and online at maizdelavida.com.

We discovered Suraj Spices at the Richland Park Farmers’ Market. Our favorite is the berbere spice - their take on the classic Ethiopian spice blend that contains cayenne, fenugreek, cumin, garlic, cinnamon, and much more. It delivers a hot, sweet, smokey flavor on anything from baked chicken to lentil stew.
