The Heimerdinger Foundation Knows the Power of Food
Every Monday and Tuesday, volunteer chef Skylar Bush places two 10-gallon stock pots full of locally sourced, mineral-rich herbs and vegetables, immune building spices, and dried kombu to bubble away on the stove. 6-8 hours later, what results is a magic elixir of health, high in vitamins and amino acids. This mineral broth is the foundation for the healing menu prepared each week at The Heimerdinger Foundation's Meals 4 Health and Healing program. It is used as a base for grains, lentils, and house-made soups, and it is seasoned with the house-made healing spice blend. It's also served as a sipping broth, providing warmth, vitamins, and sustenance to those who need it most.
The Heimerdinger Foundation, a non-profit founded by Kathie Heimerdinger in 2011 in memory of her husband, Mike, delivers nutritious, organic meals free of charge to people facing cancer and their caregivers. Only organic produce is used. All food is mineral based, low in salt, sugar-free, gluten-free and rich in antioxidants and amino acids.
The goal is to provide meals for patients that are going through chemotherapy that build up the immune system, all with a lot of love, hope, and healing in mind.
Good nutrition takes a village. It takes locally grown vegetables at their peak of flavor and nutrition, volunteer chefs and mentors, delivery angels, gardeners, and kitchen space. All of this and more is donated to The Heimerdinger Foundation. Through the generosity they have received from donors and volunteers, they have been able to serve over 100,000 dishes to patients and families since the program's inception in 2013. That's a lot of caregivers that can focus on their loved one's healing, rather than worry about what to do for dinner.
