Cindy Delvin, the matriarch of Delvin Farms is happy that kids have a break from all their after school activities. She's seen the pandemic bring families together and hopes some of their new habits stick. One such habit is picking fresh produce, like strawberries at their u-pick fields this spring. The May afternoon that I visited their farm store, kids and parents milled around with their buckets of fresh berries.

Cindy and husband Hank Sr. have been nourishing Nashvillians since 1972, when they started their farm in College Grove. Today with son, Hank Jr. they have been instrumental in starting many of the farmers markets in town, including the Richland Park Farmer's Market and the East Nashville Farmers Market. They are feeding more than 800 families this year through their CSA, including one for Vanderbilt University employees. They even have a beer on their resume, Country Roots Sweet Potato Stout through a collaboration with Tennessee Brew Works. And now you can shop for groceries, all locally produced, at their farm store in College Grove. They opened the store in 2018, before the pandemic fanned the trend in shopping local and small. No doubt their timing was good. The store, located in a 200 year-old tobacco barn on their farm, is filled with everything from local pork, chicken, eggs, milk, and cheese to jams, bread, and of course organic produce from their own fields. To make sure their customers have plenty to choose from, they also carry some non-organic or conventional produce from other regional farms, although they're quick to point out to customers which is organic and which isn't.

If you're feeling housebound, take a little road trip to College Grove and stock up on local organic produce and other local items at the Delvin Farm Store. It also happens to be across the street from Arrington Vineyards, so after shopping, stop in for a glass of wine. Unless of course you have the kids.

Other farm stores to visit:
Batey Farms, Murfreesboro
Green Door Gourmet, West Nashville
Bear Creek Farm, Thompson's Station
Bloomsbury Farms, Smyrna
Hancock Family Farm, Springfield
The Kindred Farm, Santa Fe

The charming Delvin Farm Store harkens back to when general stores were full of local products.
