New Year, New You-th

For this issue focused on wellness, we got to talking about what a “wellness” cocktail might be like. First, it should be low in alcohol, so I started with vermouth. I also grabbed Swedish Punsch, a rum-based liqueur (aka lower alcohol) to create a backbone for this drink. Its spices, bitter notes, and rich depth offer the complexity it needs.

Next, we thought about ingredients with health benefits – Elderberry juice is locally sourced and full of antioxidants for a much-needed immune system boost, orange blossom for its skin benefits (among many others). How about what comforts you when you’re ill? Tea with a little honey and lemon would be nice.

The resulting drink was good and perfectly drinkable but could use a lighter, bouncier mouthfeel. Normally, I would go for an egg white, but as this is a lower alcohol cocktail, it wouldn’t be safe. The solution? Aquafaba! The liquid typically drained from a can of garbanzo beans is an excellent (and healthy) egg-white substitute in baking and – yes – cocktails too.

Wishing you and yours health and happiness in 2021. Cheers.
