Roadtrip to Long Hollow Garden
“Each and every bottle of wine marks a specific moment in time at Long Hollow Gardens and Vineyards,” says Amy Scott, second generation operator of the one of-a-kind property in Gallatin with her husband, Hartley. The Scotts produce their limited edition wines exclusively with grapes from their acreage. No outsourced fruit makes its way into a bottle under the Scotts’ logo, and while that can make production challenging, it ties their wine intimately to their land. “We are limited on what we can produce, and we actually love that limitation, because it’s the true authenticity of the product,” Amy says.
In addition to growing all their own fruit, the Scotts pride themselves on their cultivation process. Rather than using harsh chemicals found elsewhere in the industry, the Scotts rely on a flock of Katahdin sheep for weeding and fertilizing the land.
“Every year we get to think about not only what was happening in the climate and the soil, but it also kind of marks our lives and what was happening,” Amy says. “Really, the more I’ve learned about it I’ve really just fallen in love with that phrase of wine being a time and place.”
May 3–5 at Long Hollow is the time and place to be when the summer events season kicks off, with live music, food trucks and laughter at the annual “Running of the Sheep.” Bells peel across the farm, drawing visitors to watch the Long Hollow Garden flock migrate to the vineyards for the start of summer grazing.
“It’s an environment that is taking alcohol and agriculture seriously as far as quality, but is also doing it responsibly and in an approachable and friendly way for lots of people to enjoy,” Amy says.
A respect for and celebration of nature’s fleeting seasons infuse all of Long Hollow Gardens and Vineyards’ events, from the rarity of their Blue Moon Dinner to the crescendo of an end-of-summer Picking Party to the natural beauty of a farm wedding.
“These are seasonal and temporary things. It’s not something that you can just go to a big-box store down the street and get it at any time or queue up and stream. It’s something that’s just for a little while and you’ve got to come out and suspend all expectations and just have a great time at something that’s sustainable and authentic to us right here.”
The months ahead at Long Hollow Gardens and Vineyards promise extraordinary opportunities to make authentic memories.
