The Lost Art of Farming
The Lost Art of Farming is an art and advocacy project that was born out of the combined passions of husband and wife duo Sherman and Theresa Pollard. Sherman is a photographer who has a heart for building community and Theresa is a chef and writer. In 2017, they moved out of their apartment and hit the road, in order to spend time getting to know the sustainable, organic farmers who are changing the American food system.
Since that time, they have invested their time in over 50 farms around the country, a number of which are within the Nashville foodshed; The Barefoot Farmer at Red Boiling Springs, Sounding Stone Farm and Double H Farm of The Hermitage Hotel. Their goal, as they visit each farm, is to capture the stories and daily chores of real farmers, and to use those images to introduce people to the origins of their dinner. Food is only acquired through a complicated web of relationships between land, animal, farmer, eater, and, often by way of a lengthy distribution supply chain. By celebrating good farming practices and local food, Sherman and Theresa are hoping to shift consumers away from industrial agriculture and towards farmers in their area who are producing nutrient-dense, delicious food.
The photos they capture are shared with the farmers themselves, in order to help them reach their communities, and will also be published as a book and displayed in gallery shows around the US.
