As a kid, I spent hours in the basement painting and doing arts and crafts—which of course resulted in Christmas gifts for my friends. My best friend Lisa got tired of this by 6th grade, and hurled the white snowman made of glued and painted rocks, “Why can’t you just buy me something!” Ironically, Lisa is now very crafty herself and has given me all sorts of cool things she’s made over the years.
Today, we seek out handmade, artisan gifts. We want things that are unique and evoke a sense of place. Nashville has no shortage of artisan products that are just super-cool. That’s why we’ve assembled our favorites in a special holiday section. Tear it out and put it in your purse or on the fridge— then buy local. Spend money in Nashville and it stays in Nashville.
As we are a handmade, local product ourselves, we love our fellow artisans. Supporting them keeps traditions alive and makes our world a colorful, prosperous place. Speaking of traditions, now is the time of year for all good people to break out the family recipes. This is great, but sometimes you need new recipes or inspiration. If so, you’ll find it here. We’ve assembled recipes from great cooks in Nashville that will inspire and motivate, if not make you salivate. And who knows you may start your own tradition of homemade gift giving, just don’t make it painted rock snowmen.
