Just as I do with my events and tables for The Picnic Project, I love to style my spaces for the holidays, but try to stay true to my sustainability intentions and not over consume. Also, as a 20-something on a budget, I can’t justify buying new décor each year. Hence, sustainable styling was born. Making seasonal décor items that don't hurt mother earth or your wallet is a win-win. Dried orange slice garland is perfect from Thanksgiving to New Years, adding a little festive flair to your home using everyday items. The best part is you can save it for next year!

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Oranges, blood oranges, or tangerines

• Baking sheet

• Parchment paper

• Towel

• String, twine, or ribbon

• Scissors

• Nail or large needle

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 250F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Slice oranges ¼-inch thick, keeping slices consistent for even drying. (Compost leftover small ends.)

3. Dry oranges with a towel, removing as much juice as possible.

4. Lay slices on baking sheet and bake for about three hours on middle rack, flipping slices every hour.

5. Remove from oven when slices begin to brown on the edges (be careful not to burn). Let cool.

6. Create two small holes at the top of each slice with a small nail.

7. Weave the string through both holes and repeat, threading in the same direction as you are moving along the garland (i.e. over and under or under and over.)

8. Use as many slices and length of string that fits your space!
