Forever 21st
Thirty-something-year-old Robert Higgins (
@iamblackrob) and his business partners at Make a PlayHospitality are bringing young, fresh energy and community to Hillsboro Village with their signature upscale restaurant-bar concepts, heavy on the
bar. Supper Club on Belcourt, Bungalow 10 and Jar Cocktail Club are just three of their ventures that feature elevated cocktails, steaks and music. Friday Happy Hour at Jar gathers politicians, teachers and metro employees for community meet and greets. Shot-Cuterie Board anyone? And coming soon, Sunset on Belcourt.

Classics We Love
Vui’s Kitchen
There are plenty of menu options, including pho, rice, dumplings, salads, bao buns and various proteins, at the five branches of this delightfully fresh eatery, but we seem to stick with the same choice every time: rice bowl with seared pork belly, spring mix, pickled daikon and carrots, served with chili lime dressing. When we feel like mixing it up, we put a fried egg on top. And maybe grab a bánh mì sandwich while we’re at it.
Biscuit Love, Hillsboro Village (Shhhhhh)
We’re hesitant to share this locals-only secret spot with ample parking and an umbrella-shaded patio that reminds us of glory days at Sunset Grill, so let’s keep this Belcourt Avenue biscuit-and-bacon oasis between us. We’ll leave the gleaming Gulch flagship to the visitors.
The Grilled Cheeserie, Food Truck and Hillsboro Village
Sure, we love a grilled cheese on a snowy day, along with some warm soup. But a gooey smashup of molten white cheddar on golden country white, piled with bacon, chicken, caramelized onion, basil or avocado, has become a taste of summer.
Kalamatas, Green Hills
It’s hard to divert from the gyro plate with rice, pita and salad, but we’re always rewarded by the choice of grilled salmon on top of a salad, served with a garlic knot. But we eat dessert first, taking our baklava to the table and eating it layer by layer before the entrées arrive.
Chef’s Market, Goodlettsville
You’ll think of an elevated Cracker Barrel when you hit this suburban restaurant-market with a dynamite plate lunch (and plenty of shopping in the meantime). It marries cozy classics such as roast chicken with olives, capers and prunes over mashed potatoes, with contemporary tastes, such as roast beets with quinoa, keto Caesar and apple-pomegranate salad. And save room for a piece of cake made in house by longtime baker
Sonia Arriaza.
