GO GREEN OR GO HOME
“Put it in the recycling bin,” I used to bellow upon finding my kids’ plastic bottles in the trash. “Do you want to live on a landfill?!” We all laugh at this now, but it’s a sad truth–one the movie Just Eat It documents well. The movie recently screened at a food waste awareness event at the Nashville Farmers’ Market, and here are some sobering facts.
We throw nearly 50% of our food in the trash.
Over 97% of food waste ends up in the landfill.
Every ton of food wasted results in 3.8 tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
Avoiding food waste is just one part of living green. How we live is another part. Which brings us to our farmers.
A story about two farm families who live off the land, home-school their children, and make a living from CSA’s seemed a logical part of “The Green Issue.” These families truly live in accord with nature, something most of the rest of us can’t claim–no matter how much recycling and composting we do. However, we can certainly support them by subscribing to their CSA’s (Community Supported Agriculture). You can find a list of them at ediblenashville.com
We can also shop at the farmers’ markets. There is a lot of local goodness available. According to Tasha Kennard, executive director of the Nashville Farmers’ Market, they had 10 farms in 2013 and 60 in 2016. Wow!
Can’t get to a farmers’ market? Take advice from the Tennessee Local Food Summit this past December:
“Plant something; love it; nurture it. That will help.”
