Adventure, Art & Food… at Andiamo Lodge

Nestled atop Lookout Mountain in Mentone, Alabama, just a short drive from the “brow,” the Andiamo Lodge retreat beckons with the spirit of adventure and rejuvenation. “Andiamo” means “Let’s go!” in Italian, and that’s precisely the energy co-owners Colleen Duffley, a renowned international advertising photographer and creative director, and husband Steve Carpenter, owner of Crabby Steve’s on 30A, infuse into every inch of this unique lodge.

During the pandemic, while en route to Nashville from Florida, the couple happened upon the run-down former church camp and were intrigued. They bought it, and for the next two years, they transformed it into a destination for adult guests, where visitors can immerse themselves in nature, creativity and relaxation—all things the busy couple also desired in a destination.

“Andiamo is ‘curated, not decorated,’ with every element carefully chosen to create an ambiance that reflects my personal travels and the surrounding landscape,” the owner, Colleen Duffley.

Duffley’s creativity and design are apparent everywhere, from elaborate-yet-natural tree branch arrangements that decorate the fireplace mantel and every room to the open kitchen where you can watch the couple cook before dinner. Dinner is optional, but be sure to partake as it’s phenomenal, with cocktails and a generous charcuterie spread followed by a farm-to-table meal at the common table with other guests.

Also, be sure to check out the iPad art exhibit that Duffley put together, with photography from 30 international artists. It has traveled globally and is now housed in the dining room at the lodge for all to see. It’s mesmerizing.

In addition to the cozy rooms, numerous firepits and charming grounds, there is no shortage of activities (kayaking, horseback riding, biking) and classes (flower-arranging, cooking, gardening). After a spectacular breakfast—homemade pastries; bagels with lox, cream cheese, tomatoes and microgreens; yogurt parfaits; bacon; and eggs Benedict over roasted vegetables—we chose to meander into Mentone and see the small town and its local shops. Full of history and charm, it did not disappoint. For guests exploring off the property, Andiamo also packs a picnic lunch.

On our way out, we stopped by Duffley’s store, The Gallery at Andiamo Lodge, where she sells interesting, handmade items from her friends and world travels. It’s housed just down the road in another renovated church.

Duffley leaves space in the events calendar to accommodate whimsy, but in the past, she has welcomed award-winning chefs, cheesemakers and artists who teach classes and mingle with guests. Never a dull moment at Andiamo. Let’s go!
