Christina Cohn in her studio

As galleries were closed and her studio came to a screeching halt, potter Christina Cohn started selling her bowls, pots, and plates through Instagram. She called these the “Feather Your Nest” series. They consisted mainly of smaller bowls in all different sizes that folks could collect or mix and match. She also found that she could test her new glazes on these smaller pieces and then sell them individually. This was a change from her standard collection of dinnerware and platters that typically had conformed to a certain style. The majority of her work is custom dinner ware. You can visit her studio and pick out colors and styles for her to make for you.

Christina, a Nashville native, took pottery classes at Vanderbilt and Belmont in the 90's, where she studied under Master ceramicists. She makes hand-built ceramics with a combination of slab, pinch and coil building techniques. In other words, she doesn't use a wheel. "Many of my pieces come about as a result of something I wanted in my home and life. Small simple pleasures are valuable to me. Also, durability. I spend a ridiculous amount of time compressing and smoothing rims so they will not chip. They're all dishwasher and microwave safe. I also like curved and slightly irregular shapes. I think they feel good while using them.”

While you can find her products at some stores and galleries around town and at Canvas in Homewood, Alabama, she sells most of her work from her home studio. “So many of my customers text me when they need a birthday or wedding gift and come over to shop. She also teaches workshops which you can find online at christinacohnceramics.com. And yes, you can also text her at 615-406-4521 to stop by her studio in Forest Hills. Find her on Instagram @christina_cohn_ceramics and at her email christinamcohn@gmail.com.
