In History Unbound: Emancipation Day in Tennessee, Dr. Brandon R. Byrd, scholar, author and associate professor, will talk about emancipation in the Volunteer State specifically. The regional histories and variations of emancipation celebrations are worthy of reflection and celebration, along with the nation’s commemoration of Juneteenth.

Brandon R. Byrd is a scholar of Black intellectual and social history. He is the author of The Black Republic: African Americans and the Fate of Haiti (The University of Pennsylvania Press) and a co-editor of Ideas in Unexpected Places: Reimagining Black Intellectual History (Northwestern University Press) and Haiti for the Haitians (Liverpool University Press). He teaches at Vanderbilt University, where he is an Associate Professor of History and African American & Diaspora Studies. He is currently working on a biography of Benjamin "Pap" Singleton.

With Special Guest, Gary Burke

Gary Burke is a native of Nashville and attended Tennessee State University. He currently serves as a Board member for Fort Negley, Traveller’s Rest and Stones River National Battlefield. He has been featured on the cover of the Nashville Scene and in the Civil War Times Magazine. He was the 2023 recipient of the Fletch Coke Award from the Tennessee Historical Commission. He will share original poetry during this event.
