Radical Rabbit: Mariah Ragland
Mariah describes her food as made by “Black girl magic” and herself as “a dope Black vegan mom living in Nashville.” And that’s sure a good start.
Radical Rabbit, a pop-up restaurant serving vegan soul food, started “popping up” in places like the 12 South Farmers Market and Richland Park Farmer’s Market to rave reviews just last year. But Mariah’s plates of vegan-ized comfort food have been around for multiple years before that – dished out to customers from home on her Sundays off from working at The Nashville Food Project and, in the very beginning, fresh off a contraband dorm room hot plate.
In Mariah’s own words, Radical Rabbit “provides progressive, natural, and revolutionary food to all people.” She finds particular inspiration from The Animal Liberation Movement and a deeply felt obligation to moral eating. “[When I went vegan], there weren’t a lot of options for me, so I just started creating those options.” Mariah began with conjuring up the recipes from her childhood eating with her mom. With plates like a lion’s mane mushroom burger and a smoked bbq pineapple and jackfruit sub, Mariah offers something exciting and different to vegan and non-vegan diners alike.
