First Avenue South got a shiny new gift just after Christmas with the addition of Liberty Common. It’s wide glass storefront and Parisian patio sit directly across from Ascend Amphitheater, welcoming guests as they stroll by. A sister restaurant to the successful Butchertown Hall, Executive Chef Jeffrey Rhodes and Restauranteur Terry Raley come to First Avenue with the goal of “combining the unforced elegance of a French Brasserie with the comfort and community of a southern café.” A southern brasserie!

The interior boasts the incredibly charming décor of a French café with just the right balance of cozy and class. Within the first few steps through the door, you’ll already be planning your return visit. An especially easy thing to do, given the wealth of options for dining. Liberty Common serves lunch (complete with breakfast items for the late riser), dinner, and brunch with their bar open until 10 pm every night except Saturday when it stays open to 11. Add to that their exciting “oyster hour” from 2 to 6 pm seven days a week. Shucking up a dozen oysters for a cool $18, $2 off all beer, $5 glasses of house wine, and $7 spritzes, high balls, and frozen drinks, it’s all too convenient to plop down on one of the stylishly appointed bar stools for an hour or five.

Liberty Common's homemade biscuits add a perfect southern touch to the French inspired cuisine.

The menu at Liberty Common is a delightful mix of French and Southern, with everything from steak frites and cassoulet to fried chicken (with a honey and thyme drizzle), grits, and biscuits. Especially exciting items include the buttermilk dressed crab salad, a savory and sweet pain perdu, and “le stack” – layered buttermilk pancakes with whipped fromage blanc and syrup. Whether you’re in the mood for something light or hearty, each member of your party is sure to leave happy. And just think of how lovely summer on their café patio will be! The space beckons for a great bottle of white or rosé, oysters, some country pâte, and some biscuits with friends. A leisurely afternoon stay-cation right in the heart of Nashville.
