Tamarind is the fruit of of a tall shade tree native to Asia and India. The large pods contain up to 10 seeds and a dark brown sour-sweet pulp with a flavor similar to lemons, apricots, and dates. Tamarind is a popular flavor in chutneys and curries. You can purchase tamarind concentrate (without the seeds) in ethnic markets, specifically International Market & Restaurant in Belmont.
