It did not take long for bread lines to form at the new location of Claire Meneely’s beloved bakery, which opened right after Valentine’s Day 2025. The new facility has much larger kitchen and dining spaces than the (now-closed) Wedgewood-Houston store, but even with so much lovely, new square footage, opening weekend was crowded to capacity with paniphiles queuing for cherry-pistachio muffins, pains au chocolat and egg sandwiches with avocado and pesto on slices of homemade toast.
But the line goes fast and is worth the wait. On our last visit with a rather large crowd (8 of us to be exact) we nabbed a table pretty easily. Out paraded our breakfast orders–fluffy eggs, quiches, avocado toasts and almond croissants–with ease and friendliness. Their almond croissants have been a staple of the coffee shop scene for years (and are the gold standard) but to experience their other breakfast items first hand, hot and yummy, was a spectacle all in itself. From the muffins, to scones to croissants to egg dishes, everything is flawless and perfect.
Their split baguettes with fluffy eggs and mashed avocado are perfection, as was the Egg Sandwich and the tarts. Beyond the baked goods, their salads are unique and fresh and also perfect. We’ll be back for the Farro with Castelvetrano olives, grapefruit and shaved fennel and the potato salad with fingerling potatoes and pomegranate molasses.
For all its success, Dozen was never intended to make it this long. In 2009, founder Claire Meneely started Dozen as a one-woman holiday cookie pop-up, baking in a rented commercial kitchen and selling at local farmers markets. Thanks to word-of-mouth, some good press, and building an excellent team, Dozen continues to this day. Dozen’s bakery/cafe was opened on February 2nd, 2015- Groundhog Day!
