A Kitchen Gathering Spot
We love this kitchen in the Sunnyside neighborhood of 12 South that was created by designer Maggie Anthony and architectural designer Betsy Bergin for Sarah Masen and family.
“Our kitchen has always been our primary gathering spot. We’ve cooked, cried, and celebrated there with friends and family for the last 20 years. Like a kind of makeshift chapel, it’s where we break down and build up. When friend and designer, Maggie Anthony said she would help us reimagine our living space, we knew so much of the creative shape the house took would radiate from whatever love and thoughtfulness went into the kitchen.
Most of my time cooking in the kitchen is accompanied by conversation of some kind, so we knew it needed to be chat-friendly. With architectural designer Betsy Bergin, we created a space around the sink and stove that allowed me to get all the good food preparation done without missing the chance to talk to people. The black tiles speckled with handmade stoneware provide a tender contrast to the white throughout the house, bringing a warmth into a space that is remarkably open-feeling for its size. My favorite spot is the banquette surrounded by windows looking out onto our silver maple. I can write songs while keeping an eye on dinner. This kitchen is a multitasker-of-the-heart’s dream”.
