About Merritt Mansion:
Originally constructed as a log cabin in 1799 by Captain John Rains, a Fort Nashboro co-founder, the mansion was relocated to its current site in 1840 and expanded into a federal-style home for Rain’s daughter Sally Merritt in 1870.
The house was constructed and remodeled over four periods, stretching from the 1830s to 2004. The house is unique in that three important periods of construction are all visible within the same house.
Today, the historic 1800s Merritt Mansion at 441 Humphrey Street is open to the public under Adventurous Journeys (“AJ”) Capital Partners ownership. AJ Capital is embarking on a multi-year restoration of the historic home. The restoration and adaptive reuse of the Merritt Mansion is part of AJ Capital’s larger strategy to retain the scale and character of the neighborhood while opening these spaces to the community. Thoughtful and careful preservation of the building’s historic nature will create an inviting space for various events and uses.
