Cumberland Seed Commons Track @ TN Local Food Summit
The Tennessee Local Food Summit will celebrate its 13th Annual Conference November 30 to December 3, 2023 at Cumberland University Alumni Hall, 408 S. Maple St., Lebanon, TN, 37087. A multi-day Conference Track Building Our Seed Commons was coordinated in partnership with Tribal Nations, local farmers, and seed experts to plan a seed-saving and seed-sharing network encompassing the watershed of the Cumberland River. This will be held on November 30 and December 1.
Day 1 of the Track is devoted to the organizational development of the Cumberland River Seed Commons initiative. Day 2 of the Track is a continuation of the organizational development of our Seed Commons with incorporation of Indigenous wisdom, historical examples of seed commons, current USDA seed initiatives, practices of seed keeping experts, seed saving techniques and tools, resources for seed farmers, and more. The TN Local Food Summit is honored to have Christina Justice, Secretary of Natural Resources, and Feather Smith, Ethnobotanist, participating as keynote and panelist respectively on behalf of Chief Hoskins of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.
The concept of the Cumberland River Seed Commons is of national significance. The Cumberland River Seed Commons will serve as a hub that will bring together individuals, organizations, institutions, and government agencies to connect and collaborate around the distribution, education, planting, harvesting, cleaning, storing, research, seed forecasting, preservation, cultural exchange, rematriation, ritualizing, and honoring of seeds.
