The 14th Annual Cookin' To Build food festival is held every year on the first Saturday of November at the Historic Town Square in Murfreesboro. The event raises money for Habitat for Humanity of Rutherford County to build affordable houses for families in need. The event typically rasies $20,000 from sponsors and $20 attendee ticket sales.

Attendees receive a hand-painted pottery bowl that they can take home, and all-you-can-eat samples of chili, soup, stew or gumbo (anything served in a bowl) from 30-40 area cooking teams. Cooking teams are both amateur cooks and professional chefs, provided by organizations, companies and restaurants. Popular resturants have included The Alley on Main, Puckett's Grocery & Restaurant, Metro Diner, Jim N' Nicks, Waffle House, Chick-fil-A, and others.

Entertainment, crafts, event tote bag, drinks and desserts are also included in the ticket price. Attendees also vote on the best Food Team, who receives the coveted Golden Bowl Award. Some winners have been Sweet & Smoky Brisket Stew by Chef Dani Amendola, Creamy Tomato Basil Soup and Grilled Cheese Toasts by Oakland High School, and a Zuppa Toscana Soup by the Hammer Down for Habitat / General Mills Team.

A unique part of this event is that people can go to The Pottery Place in Murfreesboro before the event and paint their own bowl, which will be fired and glazed and ready for them at the event. "Bowl Painting To Go" is also available for those to paint at home. The deadline to paint bowls this year is October 15.

This is one of Murfreesboro's most popular community events and 600-800 attendees of all ages are expected. There is plenty of room for people to stroll the Rutherford Courthouse Square and visit quaint shops as part of Main Street Murfreesboro.
