Every July, the East Nashville Farmers Market hosts their Annual Pie Contest, an old-fashioned event with grandmas, kids, hipsters, and young people arriving with their baked goodies in tow. Last year I was privileged to judge it. Rebecah Boynton, Laura Wilson and I sat perched at a table while pies were presented, cut, and served. It’s not all it’s cracked up to be tasting over 24 pieces of pie in succession in the heat—but fortunately for us, East Nashville has some outstanding bakers. The savory Zucchini Bisquick Pie made a resurgence, (something we were not expecting) and berry pies of all sorts were widely and well-represented. But the pie we swooned over was a deep-dish Lemon Chess Pie from Samika Cohen. The winner of the savory category was the Tomato Pie from Celeste Davidson.
