The Tank Room at the Belle Meade Winery

( ,mooz’booSH)—starters to entertain the mouth and the mind.

A PLANTATION WINE TASTING

You may not know this, but Belle Meade Plantation was the premier breeding farm for American thoroughbreds in the South for over a century. The Harding and Jackson families hosted US Presidents, fabled American frontiersman, and our nation’s foremost business tycoons. The Belle Meade Winery was founded in 2009 as a non-profit fundraiser for the continuing preservation of the site. Today, you can sip and savor wines in their historic horse stables or the Tank Room, shown above. Both are fun and funky and create a unique experience. Each tour of the mansion ends in the winery for a FREE wine tasting.

GARDENER’S APRON

So often we find ourselves gardening only to realize we’ve misplaced the pruners, once again. Cotton and Moss to the rescue! We love their Garden Utility Apron because it’s functional, stylish, and handmade by Nashvillian Kelly Savoca. The pockets are plenty big, and made with a sturdy organic cotton canvas. And face it ladies, you can probably use it for a million other things as well, whether you’re a cook, artist or handyperson. If you’re a unique individual, have yours embroidered.

MATCHLESS SODA

If you haven’t tasted Matchless Coffee Soda—the fruity, coffee, sparkly concoction developed here by coffee innovators Nathanael Mehrens, Sean Stewart, and Jamie Cunningham—you’re missing out. Once only available on tap at Steadfast Coffee, this spring it became available by the can. It is indeed matchless. Pick some up at these stores around town: Stay Golden, EiO & THE HIVE, The Produce Place, Midtown Corkdorks Wine Spirits, Fat Bottom Brewing Co., Nicky’s Coal Fired, The Fainting Goat Coffee, The Soda Parlor, and Crema.

CREATOR HEATH CLARK OF H CLARK DISTILLERY

Heath Clark was busy with his thriving law career when one day his boss made a somewhat funny offhand comment: “You sure talk about Whiskey a lot.” That was all Heath needed to realize he was in the wrong profession, so after “getting permission from God and everyone” (including his wife), he traded in his briefcase for a still and started making craft spirits at his new micro-batch distillery.

As he carefully prepares his one barrel a week (compared to about 2,400 barrels per day at Jack Daniel’s), Heath is proud to be honing “a craft that emanates from the region of the country I call home.” He makes just four spirits—Tennessee Dry Gin, New Whiskey, Tennessee Black & Tan, and Tennessee Bourbon—and he’ll pour them for you personally at the rustic, five-seater bar. The main ingredient his spirits all share, he explains, is patience. “If you’re going to be small, you’d better be good.”—Old Liquors Magazine
